How to get your news into the Independent Coast Observer

Choose your news

Is your club or organization planning an event, or did it give a donation, organize a project, or take other action? Usually, one item that is timely will make the best news. An article about one subject is more focused, and makes better impact.

Do it in writing

Submissions for publication that are typed are clearer, less subject to error, and less likely to be overlooked in our busy newspaper office. If a typewriter is unavailable, please print clearly -- especially phone numbers and the spelling of names!

Include all the facts

Remember the classic news formula -- Who, What, When, Where, Why, How. Make a mental checklist as you read your submission -- are they all there? If an important fact is missing, we'll try to contact you, but if we can't reach you, we may not be able to run your item. (Include the date and day of week of your event, to assure accuracy.)The name of the person submitting the item, and a daytime phone number are essential for confirming information you submit -- and can help us if we have questions or want to expand the news item beyond the facts you have submitted. A news releases are edited for publication. Please be prepared to see changes in what you wrote.

Are photos available?

We can use clear photos for reproduction in the ICO, and can copy from color, though black and white photos are preferable. Please contact the Editor two weeks in advance to schedule publicity photos taken by the ICO.

Do you have regular meetings?

Each week in the ICO, we print a schedule of regular meetings of local civic organizations. Please check the Civic Meetings feature in the ICO and see if your meetings are correctly shown. If not, contact the Editor .

Are any special events coming up?

The ICO maintains a calendar of special events in our community. When you are planning one, give us a call so we can put it on the schedule and alert you at the same time of any other events already registered.

Where should your items go?

To make the ICO more useful to our readers, each week's edition is organized into several departments. Mark Your Calendar™ is a page of short items in our Splash section of upcoming entertainment events. Brief Coast Notes are short items of general news, such as hearings, meeting agenda items, etc. The Open Space™ and Fence Post™ columns are devoted to opinion and letters from our readers or other outside sources as a forum of ideas. Social notes are welcome to the Telescope™ column. While of course there is no charge to submit news items or letters to the editor on subjects of interest, "Thank you" notes should appear under Bouquets in the Trade Winds™ Classified Ads, available at a reduced rate.

Check the deadlines!

Entertainment items and photos for the Splash section should be submitted by 12:00 noon on Monday, while 5:00 PM Tuesday is the deadline for Fence Post letters, Open Space, and other items. Of course, if you know of breaking news, call us anytime!
The deadline for classified and display advertising is 5:00 PM Monday.
